Principal's Message

Principal Eileen Cotter
I am excited to welcome back all of our returning families as well as the many new families to another school year at Highlands. We are a school with a tradition of excellence. Our staff is committed to providing our students with a challenging instructional program. Our talented staff is a caring team that works together to provide a high quality learning experience in a nurturing and safe environment.

Highlands'  primary academic focus is literacy in reading, writing, and mathematics. Learning activities are also integrated in history/social science, science, physical education, and the arts. The staff provides a balanced academic program to help all students have a happy and successful future.

As a team of teachers and parents we work together to prepare the students academically and socially to be productive and successful members of our society. We want our parents to be involved in our school, by helping reinforce the learning and aide in the development of happy and healthy learners.  With your help we can do our best possible with our students. Our PTA is extremely supportive and we encourage all parents to participate in activities through the PTA, by volunteering in the classrooms, through parent education activities, attending conferences, Back to School Night, coming to Open House or by joining our English Learner Advisory Council or School Site Council.

We are proud to be a PeaceBuilder school. As PeaceBuilders, we notice hurts, give up put downs, right wrongs, praise people, seek wise people and help others. Throughout the year we also emphasize developing specific character traits such as respect, responsibility, honesty and integrity. We pride ourselves on being fair, consistent, and emphasize that each student is responsible for his/her own behavior. Our goal is to provide an environment where children and adults are respectful and courteous to one another here and in our community.

We are all looking forward to a wonderful school year filled with learning, new friendships and life lessons that will stay with our students for years to come. Be sure to stop by and introduce yourself if we haven’t met yet. My door is always open and I welcome your input on how Highlands is serving your child well and what we can do to make their school experience even better.
